5 Things You Should Know About Microneedling

5 things you should know about microneedling. Victoria BC

Microneedling is a fantastic treatment that can be offered on its own, or as a part of a comprehensive treatment program. This minimally invasive procedure offers a range of benefits, from improved skin texture to enhanced collagen production. At Glow Luxe, we've been very pleased with the results we have been able to achieve for our clients with this treatment method. Whether you’re new to the concept or considering trying it for yourself, here are five essential things you should know about microneedling before diving in.

1. What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves using a device equipped with tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries on the skin’s surface. These small punctures trigger the skin’s natural healing process, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that are vital for smooth, youthful skin.

This treatment is commonly used to address a variety of skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and enlarged pores.

2. Microneedling Can Treat Various Skin Concerns

One of the biggest advantages of microneedling is its versatility. It’s not just for those with aging skin! This treatment can be highly effective in addressing a range of issues:

  • Acne Scars: The punctures stimulate the body’s healing response, which can help reduce the appearance of scars over time.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Dark spots and uneven skin tone can be minimized.
  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Collagen production improves skin elasticity, reducing the appearance of fine lines and crow’s feet.
  • Stretch Marks: Many users report improvement in the texture of their skin after microneedling on areas prone to stretch marks.

Whether your concern is texture, tone, or signs of aging, microneedling could be a suitable option to rejuvenate your skin.

3. What To Expect From Microneedling

The idea of tiny needles puncturing your skin can sound intimidating and possibly painful, but most people find microneedling to be only mildly uncomfortable. In fact, we've actually had clients drift towards sleep during their treatment. Approximately one hour before the procedure, a numbing cream is applied to the skin, significantly reducing and even eliminating any discomfort.

During treatement, a hand piece or pen is utilized and moved around the treatment area. The depth of the needles and the type of device used can be adjusted based on your skin type and tolerance, so the treatment is customizable. After the procedure, you may experience redness and minor swelling, which typically subsides after 24-48 hours. Most treatments take between 10-30 min.

4. Aftercare Is Crucial

Microneedling opens up tiny channels in your skin, which means your post-treatment skincare routine becomes even more important. Immediately after the procedure, your skin may feel sensitive, and you should avoid sun exposure, harsh products, and intense workouts for at least 48 hours while the micro-channels heal. Even if your skin feels "normal" within the first 24 hours, the channels are open and sweat or harsh products can get into these areas and cause inflammation and irritation.

  • Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer.
  • Apply a high SPF broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays.
  • Avoid using exfoliants or retinoids for a few days as your skin heals.

Following the right aftercare ensures you maximize the benefits of the treatment while minimizing the risk of irritation or complications.

5. Results Take Time but Are Worth the Wait

While you might notice a glowing complexion a few days after your session, the true benefits of microneedling take time to develop. Since the process stimulates collagen production, it can take weeks or even months to see the most significant improvements in skin texture and firmness.

A typical treatment plan involves multiple sessions, spaced about 4-6 weeks apart, depending on your skincare goals. Gradually, you’ll notice smoother skin, reduced scars, and a more youthful appearance. Patience is key, but the results are often long-lasting and worth the investment.
